Pi is infinite and, by definition, unknowable. “There’s a beauty about it – a beautiful dichotomy or tension.” “We know a lot about Pi, but we really don't know anything about Pi,” says Dr Britz. “Not only is it linked to every circle, but Pi sometimes pops up in formulas that have nothing to do with circles, like in probability and calculus.”ĭespite being the most famous number (International Pi Day is held annually on 14 March, 3.14 in American dating), there is a lot of mystery around it. “When you look into other aspects of nature, you will suddenly find Pi everywhere,” says Dr Britz. “The interwovenness of maths and beauty is itself beautiful to me,” says Dr Britz. Many mathematical concepts exhibit a similar harmony between pattern and surprise, elegance and chaos, truth and mystery. “Patterned and ordered sounds with a touch of the unexpected can have added personality, charm and depth.” “This same idea can be seen in music,” says Dr Britz. However, a feature that breaks up the symmetry in a small, interesting or surprising way – such as a beauty spot – adds to the beauty. We feel delight and excitement.”įor example, humans perceive symmetrical faces as beautiful. “When we spot something deviating from a pattern – when there’s a touch of the unexpected – our brains reward us once again. “Our brains reward us when we recognise patterns, whether this is seeing symmetry, organising parts of a whole, or puzzle-solving,” he says. In 2018, Dr Britz gave a TEDx talk on the Mathematics of Emotion, where he used recent studies on maths and emotions to touch on how maths might help explain emotions, like beauty. Here, Dr Britz shares some of his favourite connections between maths and beauty. Other times, it’s the thought processes that make your mind turn in nice ways, the emotions that you get, or just working in the flow – like getting lost in a good book.” “Sometimes, the beauty and enjoyment of maths is in the concepts, or in the results, or in the explanations. I’ve loved it ever since I was a little kid. “From a personal point of view, maths is just really fun to do. He also finds beauty in the mathematical process. While combinatorics sits within pure mathematics, Dr Britz has always been drawn to the philosophical questions about mathematics. “The two are intertwined.”ĭr Britz works in combinatorics, a field focused on complex counting and puzzle solving. “Maths is not only seen as beautiful – beauty is also mathematical,” says Dr Thomas Britz, a lecturer in UNSW Science’s School of Mathematics & Statistics. It can help explain the way galaxies spiral, a seashell curves, patterns replicate, and rivers bend.Įven subjective emotions, like what we find beautiful, can have mathematic explanations. Mathematics is visible everywhere in nature, even where we are not expecting it.

In this case, it is necessary to decide photo composition and adjust focus accordingly before attaching the filter.Īfter focusing in AF mode, switch to MF mode so that the focus position won't change.Ī nice trick for cameras with live view mode is to focus while looking through the enlarged surface of the crystal liquid screen (or through the electronic view finder) instead of looking through the optical one. When shooting in dark environments and with ND filters in a high ND value, it is not possible to adjust focusing right after attaching the filter. Aperture: set at f/8 first, adjust according to eventual changes in shooting conditions.ISO sensitivity: set standard setting (ISO100 or ISO200).Shutter speed won't be as planned at "Program Auto (P)". Exposure mode: set your camera on "aperture priority mode (A/AV)" or "Manual Exposure (M)".This way, hands shaking won't affect your shots. Let's mount and fix firmly your camera on a tripod, first. One example of shooting method Secure your camera on a tripod ND filters: How to use with slow shutter speed The images below show, for example, the difference in image quality when shooting at f/8 or f/22 respectively. With a big f-number, that means a small aperture's hole diameter, the light entering the diaphragm hole bends around it and consequently cannot reach the image sensor elements, causing degradation in the final image quality. In photography, diffraction occurs when light waves encounter an obstacle, causing them to bend around this obstacle. In these light conditions, too, ND filters are necessary. On bright, sunny days, even if shooting with a low aperture value (for example f/1.4 or f/1.8) and at the limits of the camera's shutter speed (for example 1/4000 sec or 1/8000 sec), your pictures may still result overexposed. When you need an open aperture as you want to blur the background an closed aperture) means poor image quality on your final picture (see "diffraction phenomenon"). Moreover, shooting with a too big f-numbers (i.e. by setting bigger f-number) but there will be still some limits, ending up in overexposed images. Technically speaking, you could slow down the shutter speed by simply closing up the aperture (i.e. Why ND filters are still necessary? To further slow down the shutter speed I can adjust exposure with camera settings. For example, a "1 stop light loss" means approximately a 50% reduction in light amount, a "2 stops light loss" a further 25%, a "3 stops light loss" a further 12.5%, and so on. This indicates how many aperture stops you will lose when using ND filters. On ND filter packages you may also find indications like "3 stops light loss", etc. For example, ND4 = 1/4 light amount reduction, ND8 = 1/8 light amount reduction, and so on. The numeric value also shows the amount of light reduced. The higher the number, the more you can slow down the shutter speed. ND filters usually come with a numeric value, like ND4, ND8 etc. ND means "neutral density", as ND filters can in fact reduce the amount of light entering the lens without affecting color rendering and color reproduction. Basically, it works in the same way your sunglasses reduce the dazzle of the sun for your eyes. A ND filter is a grey glass filter that reduces the amount of light entering the camera lens. Since each of the lenses has variations (accessed by swiping right or left), you can have hours of photo adventures. The iPad version of Adobe Photoshop has a few clever desktop features, such as the refine edge brush, which lets you better define an object you want to select, and rotate canvas. And some lenses have small animations, like shooting stars or a blasting-off rocket ship. That makes it possible to position and resize lens-placed objects (such as planets or clouds). In addition, some lenses have “sprites” - smart objects that can be pinched, zoomed and moved within a Sensei-identified area of the picture. So, for instance, the sky lenses can change the color of the sky, add or remove clouds, and even add the appropriate reflections in a body of water, without affecting other portions of the picture. But what makes Camera special is the use of Adobe Sensei which automatically identifies the type of photo (portrait or landscape) and creates masks for key aspects, such as a face or the sky. To update the sketch, we’ll add variables for the led pins and add commands to turn the leds on and off. Myservo.write(i) // write the next position to the servoįinally, we can add one more refinement and have the Arduino feedback position status via two pins that we can use to power leds at the control panel. With practice and consistent placement of servos, they can all be the same but if not, storing unique settings for each servo is not difficult. The divergent angle depends on how the servo was installed in relation to the turnout– it will either be a larger angle in the 110 – 120 degree range, or a smaller angle in the 60-70 degree range. The straight position is always 90 degrees because of the way I install the servo. Here is a simple sketch to control a servo and have it move over about 2 seconds every time a button is pressed. On the output side of the button a pull-down resistor routes stray power to ground to guarantee that the pin is in a LOW state whenever the button is not pushed. The button takes power from the +5v board supply and, when the button is pushed, routes the power to a designated pin, putting the pin in a HIGH state. Servos can be independently powered, in which case only the signal wire and ground are connected to the Arduino. Here is the basic circuit for controlling a servo with an Arduino Uno, where the servo draws power from the Arduino. the loop function runs after setup until the board is powered off Myservo.write(90) // set the servo shaft at 90 degrees Myservo.attach(9) // attaches to the servo on pin 9 Void setup() // the setup function is run once at boot from here on use the variable "myservo" to Next, copy and paste the following code into a new Sketch file inside the Arduino IDE. For this step, you'll need to have the Arduino IDE installed. The first thing I do is prepare the servo by setting the position of the shaft to 90 degrees, the midpoint of its 180 degree total travel. I do this by attaching the servo to an Arduino Uno and uploading this little sketch once to set the servo (for those who don’t know, “//” signifies the start of a comment ): #include // compiler directive to get the servo library The following sketch will spin the servo forward for 1 second, pause for 1 second, spin in reverse for 1 second, and pause for 1 second on repeat. Why ? Is it faulty? But I do hear some rotation sound, but it's not rotating CCW.Tower Pro SG90 which can be purchased for $2 to $3 each. I tried this code and even tried to do myservo.write(180) but only myservo.write(0) and myservo.write(700) works which means the servo only rotates CW. Use this short program (not tested) #include I have taken all of the values from the datasheet. Tell us exactly what happens when you use each of the following, one at a time of that document says it is a 180 deg servo - which seems like a regular servo to me. Some servo test code you might try to find the operating characteristics of your servo. If you prefer simplicity, you can also use UFW, which vastly simplifies iptables management. To only allow SSH from a specific IP address, use the following iptables command: $ iptables - A INPUT - p tcp -s your-ip- address -dport 22 -j ACCEPT A quick check with the iptables command $ iptables -L will show you if the network firewall has been configured. For managing ingress and egress traffic, nothing beats the power of the native netfilter iptables. In the case of the bastion host configured with OpenSSH, only allow ingress to SSH (port 22 or a custom port if the default is changed) and egress to the upstream SSH server. Similar to limiting active services on the bastion host, limit networking capabilities and lock down all the ports with a deny all strategy. These commands help you identify all the running processes and services and stop or remove them as required. To quickly view active and running services under Systemd, use the following systemctl command: $ systemctl list-units -type=service -state=runningĪlternatively, you can also use the process status command ps such as $ ps aux, top, or htop commands to list running processes. Running unnecessary services only increases the attack surface of the bastion host. For example, an SSH bastion host should only be running sshd daemon and nothing else. Once the right server OS is used, ensure that only required services are installed and run. If you or your team are comfortable with any particular OS, go for it. As for picking up the right distribution, understand that any system is as secure as how properly you know the system and configure it. For example, refer to these websites that should guide you in installing a minimal OS: ubuntu minimal, debian netinst, and centos. Your bastion host may not need all of these packages! It is a good practice to review all of the pre-installed packages and remove those that are not required for your bastion host.Ī rule of thumb is to use minimal OS images and installation packages as required. Similarly, $ yum list installed | wc -l command shows there are 453 packages pre-installed in a fresh AWS Amazon Linux 2 server image. Quickly checking with $ dpkg-query -W | wc -l command shows there are 567 packages pre-installed in a fresh AWS Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server image. 14 best practices to secure bastion hostīelow are the 14 best practices to secure bastion hosts, including hardening server OS, hardening OpenSSH authentication and cryptographic operations, and deploying the host with high availability. Since the services behind the bastion are configured to trust incoming connections from the bastion host, principles of zero trust networking should be applied so that incoming connections from the bastion host are further verified, which would help in case the bastion host is already compromised. Thus, security of both the server deployed as a bastion host and the network in which the bastion host will be placed must be carefully considered as an attack surface for bastion host exploitation. OS and network exploitation) or find a network policy misconfiguration that allows bypassing the bastion host entirely. Bastion host attack surfaceĪdversaries can either compromise a bastion host (e.g. If you want to learn more about the security importance of bastion hosts, read our blog on why bastion hosts are an indispensable security enforcement stack for secure infrastructure access. If you are looking for a quick guide on creating an SSH bastion, check our previous blog post on setting up an SSH Bastion. This blog post focuses on following best practices on building and deploying a secure SSH bastion server based on OpenSSH. Additionally, insufficient resources may give attackers the chance to execute Denial of Service attacks which may cause service downtime. The placement of bastion hosts in the infrastructure also plays an important role because an improper network configuration may allow attackers to completely bypass the bastion host and directly reach their target server. The core concept of security hardening a bastion host is to run a bastion server with minimal components and reduce the attack surface as much as possible. After all, bastion hosts are the first target for attackers looking to compromise access to infrastructure. Although it is relatively easy to deploy a bastion host in your infrastructure, securing a bastion host requires careful consideration from design to deployment. NEIC targets a 20-minute release time for response events. See also: Building a National Seismic Monitoring Center: NEIC from 2000 to the Present "Response Events" and Processing Priorities These research efforts are intended to improve the data service provided by the NEIC to the scientific community and the general public and, ultimately, to aid in earthquake hazard mitigation. Investigations range from resolving the internal structure of the Earth and understanding the mechanics of earthquake rupture through rapid assessment of an earthquake's impact. The "Earthquake Data Report" (EDR), also a monthly publication, provides additional and more detailed information, mainly for the use of seismologists.Ī wide range of research is also conducted at the NEIC. The "Preliminary Determination of Epicenters" (PDE) is published weekly and monthly. The "Quick Epicenter Determinations" (QED), a very preliminary list of earthquakes, is computed daily. The data that are collected by the NEIC are published in a variety of formats and publications and are available electronically via the Internet. The NEIC also collects non-instrumental reports of the effects of earthquakes on people and man-made structures and prepares isoseismal maps showing the distribution of intensities in widely felt or damaging shocks. The NEIC also relies on the cooperation of a variety of seismic reporting networks throughout the world to gather data. To enable the detection and location of all felt earthquakes with the U.S., the NEIC acts as the National Operations Center of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), a cooperative venture between the NEIC and the operators of the regional seismic networks across the United States. The NEIC collects data through the operation of national and global networks, and through cooperative agreements. Known by many people in the news media as Mr. Person - first spokesperson for NEIC, starting with Great Alaska Earthquake in 1964 and continuing for more than 40 years. These are the most important of the many million earthquakes which are estimated to occur each year. At the present time, the NEIC staff locates and publishes approximately 30,000 earthquakes on a yearly basis. The NEIC issues rapid reports for those earthquakes with magnitudes at least 3.0 in the eastern United States, 3.0 in the western United States, or 5.0 (or are known to have caused damage) anywhere else in the world. When a damaging earthquake occurs in a foreign country, the earthquake information is passed to the staffs of the American embassies and consulates in the affected countries and to the United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA). This information is communicated to federal and state government agencies who are responsible for emergency response, to government public information channels, to national and international news media, to scientific groups (including groups planning aftershock studies), and to private citizens who request information. The NEIC operates a 24-hour-a-day service to determine the location and magnitude of significant earthquakes in the United States and around the world as rapidly and accurately as possible. These efforts are all aimed at mitigating the risks of earthquakes to mankind and they are made possible by the fine international cooperation that has long characterized the science of seismology.Ĭhart showing the National Earthquake Information Center's data sources, products, and applications. Third, the NEIC pursues an active research program to improve its ability to locate earthquakes and to understand the earthquake mechanism.
